15 things I Wish I Knew When I Graduated High School

1. You don’t have to achieve all of your goals and dreams before you’re 20, take it easy.

2. ‘Real life’ experience is actually the most important thing when it comes to working full time and going out with new people.

3. If you study anything “creative” don’t expect your university degree to have a lot of structure.

4. You learn a lot by just being there, not necessarily theory, but life skills at trade education, uni and school.

5. If you don’t know what you want to do with your life, take some time off and sort yourself out by working or getting some work experience, you don’t have to rush into uni.

6. Which jobs you can apply for or get, by completing a specific university degree.
7. You won’t learn ‘street smarts’ or life skills from a degree.

8. School never taught us how to do finances, budget or taxes.

9. To the QUT Gardens Point students: Life is complete when you manage to walk from Queen Street to Gardens Point and get every ‘green man’ at the 6 crossings in a row, on your way there.

10. A uni party is always better.

11. Working full time at 18 can be pretty lame, especially if you’re the youngest there.

12. TALK to people in your future industry and ask them what they do, see the reality of your future job before studying it for 3 more years.

13. TAFE or a trade school can actually be a really great option to help you understand what you like and don’t, even though it isn’t always ‘valued’ as highly as people see university, which is a shame.

14. QCS practice or end of school exams are NOT ACTUALLY the be all and end all of your life. There are so many other ways to get into uni, so take a night off studying and just relax y’all.

15. Often graduates feel just as confused and scared at the end of their degree, than school leavers do at the end of high school, because they are left to fend for themselves again… Crazy right?

16. Your first year out of school is made for partying, don’t feel bad about it.
