Guide to Kefalonia, Greece

Do you want to go to an untouched island, welcoming and warm people with wonderful Greek food?

Well then here is your guide to Kefalonia!

We stayed in Agia Effima, which is a 50 minute drive from the Kefalonia airport (between 45-55€ taxi ride). Our hotel was called StarVillas Apartments which was only 30€ per night for a twin share self contained apartment, which is a great deal. The owners Katarina and Nikos are very friendly and helpful and introduced us to Cosmas, our taxi driver for our entire stay in Kefalonia who was so friendly and his rates were extremely reasonable.

Public transport is not a reliable mode of transport in Kefalonia so do not recommend that you rely on it – due to the small population of people on Kefalonia. Car hire or taking a taxi is your best option. If you don’t drive, you can hire a boat for a day and also do numerous one-day boat tours.

As I said earlier, in Agia Efima our apartment (Star Villas) set us up with Cosmos (cab driver) who drove us around everywhere and was extremely reasonable.

Greek food is great for gluten free! You can order lots of fresh fish, souvlaki (meat on a skewer), greek salad and more! The options are endless and prices are great. Main meals are between 8€-12€ and the portion size is substantial.

What to do?

Agia Effima

Has a beautiful (but small) rock beach just a 10 minute walk up the hill from the port to the left.

Melissani Cave

Absolutely beautiful experience to see these, they are quite small but really a unique and gorgeous experience. Entrance is 6€ and it takes about 10-15 minutes to go through the cave.

Anti Samos Beach

Perfect white pebble beach looking off into the distance, we spent the entire day just lazing around on the beach here – amazing! There are modern cafe-bars with lunch and cocktails on offer!

Daily Cruises

In Agia Effima “Daily Cruises” depart Monday to Friday at 9:30am taking you to either Ithaca or 3 islands. These are a great way to see a lot of places, a very chilled way of touring and a great price (only 35€ for the day). If they think you’re nice or pretty they may even give you a discount! 😉

Hire a boat!

You don’t even need a drivers licence or experience, located on the port of Agia Effima, spend a day discovering the small remote beaches along Kefalonia! Bring a packed lunch and lots of water, amazing.

Myrtos Beach

The beach in all of the pictures!! Unfortunately it was closed while we were in Kefalonia, but this is one of the top 10 beaches in the world!

Local tips

Everyone is extremely friendly and welcoming in Kefalonia – we met a lot of locals and they all wanted to chat for quite some time! The atmosphere is beautiful, friendly and welcoming and Kefalonia is a great choice of destination if you’re looking for a relaxing getaway.

Area guide

Lots of restaurants and shops, with some cool bars.

Favourite restaurant? Dolphins Restaurants for seafood or La Famiglia for variety.

Drinks? Aqua Marina for happy hour or Willys Pub for a hippie chill vibe.

Note: 50 minute drive from the airport.

Agia Efima * Stay here!

Bay with lots of restaurants lined along the water. You can swim in the bay or at the top of the hill there is another beautiful small beach with white pebbles. The town is so small, everyone knows each other and they are all so accommodating and friendly, after 3 days in the town we already knew a lot of people!

Favourite restaurant? The Local for fish. Fiore D’Amore for a light lunch. Carena for milkshakes.

Drinks? Carena for happy hour.

Note: 50 minute drive from the airport.

Small fishing town with a couple of restaurants and a bay.

Note: About a 1 hour and 30 minute drive from the airport.

Small island, the capital city has lots of restaurants along the bay however it is not ideal to stay here due to how small and isolated each town is.

We didn’t get to visit Argostoli but it is the more touristy area of Kefalonia. It is a good option if you’re looking for more to do and want to stay closer to the airport. It is probably about a 15 minute drive from the airport.

Pamper yourself!

Feeling like a fancy pedicure to show off in the clear blue waters? Go to Natasha! She runs her own beauty spa from home in Agia Effima and is such a friendly, down to earth lady that is really talented at what she does!
